Anthropic Posts $17 Billion Quarterly Revenue and Warns of Self-Improving AI[1][9]
An amended IPO filing reveals a $23.29 billion third-quarter loss and $895.4 billion in future compute commitments.[2][6]

Anthropic generated $33.24 billion in revenue over the nine months ended Sept. 30, roughly a 1,200% year-over-year jump, while posting a $104 billion net loss driven largely by convertible notes and derivative liabilities.[3] In the third quarter alone, revenue rose about 1,127% from a year earlier to roughly $17 billion alongside a $23.29 billion net loss.[1][2]
Enterprise buyers are fueling that growth, with Anthropic reporting a 900 percent net revenue retention rate and roughly three-quarters of its customers in the first half of 2026 spending at least $100,000 annually.[8] Still, quarter-over-quarter revenue growth cooled to about 47% in the third quarter, down from 144% in the second quarter and 132% in the first.[2]
According to The Information, third-quarter operating costs hit $17.5 billion, erasing the prior quarter's profit.[4] Anthropic blamed the surge mainly on $5 billion for short-term compute capacity and $2 billion in employee donation matching.[5] Longer term, its amended S-1 discloses about $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and leases, nearly all for infrastructure and compute.[6] According to the New York Times, the IPO could raise roughly $100 billion, and the company has struck dozens of compute deals with Amazon, Google, SpaceX, chipmakers, and former crypto miners.[7]
Beyond the financials, Anthropic warned in the filing that internal estimates for upcoming models suggest it may soon trigger its Responsible Scaling Policy threshold for recursive self-improvement (RSI), defined as dramatically accelerated progress driven by AI.[9] Anthropic said it does not expect to safely let Claude autonomously design and build future frontier models without human oversight, and is weighing policy changes to keep humans in control.[10]
HOW WE CHECKED IT
Every fact above is a numbered claim below. Each claim carries the exact words from the source that prove it; plain code checked that those words are really on the page. Then DeepSeek (deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash-1017) and ChatGPT (openai/gpt-6-luna) voted on every claim without seeing each other's votes or the reporter's evidence, and a copy desk checked that every line says no more than its claims. No lab checks its own news. Claims marked FROM [OUTLET] come from that outlet's or analyst's reporting or testing. The Council checked that the source says it.

"Third-quarter revenue increased around 47%, a steep drop from 144% growth in Q2 and 132% in Q1. The company reported a net loss of $23.29 billion during its third quarter." SOURCE ↗
"The artificial intelligence company said it generated $33.24 billion in revenue for the nine months ended Sept. 30, up roughly 1,200% from the same period last year. It reported a $104 billion net loss during the period, though most of that was due to the change in fair value of convertible notes and derivative liabilities." SOURCE ↗

"Anthropic pointed to two main drivers behind the cost spike: $5 billion for short-term compute capacity it locked in and $2 billion in employee donation matching." SOURCE ↗
"In the amended S-1, Anthropic said it has entered into purchase commitments and lease agreements with an aggregate committed spend of about $895.4 billion, "substantially all of which is related to compute and infrastructure."" SOURCE ↗
"Those costs add pressure on the IPO, which could raise around $100 billion, the New York Times reports." SOURCE ↗
"Its net revenue retention is 900 percent. Pretty good! That revenue isn’t consumers, either. About three-quarters of customers in the first half of 2026 are spending at least $100,000 a year." SOURCE ↗

"“We do not anticipate being able to safely use Claude to fully autonomously design and build successive generations of frontier models without meaningful human supervision or understanding, if and when that becomes technically possible." SOURCE ↗
