Google Will Switch Off Gemini for K-12 Students Unless Schools Opt In[1][2]

Google says schools will get more details in the coming months, before the change rolls out.[6]

Starting next year, Google will turn off its AI tools for K-12 student accounts, including Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search, until school administrators explicitly enable them.[1][2][3]

Because Google dominates classroom apps and Chromebooks, the new default will reach deep into education.[5] Google says it made the call after consulting schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers.[4]

Google is also expanding Guided Learning, a mode that coaches students step by step instead of handing over answers, which is now available worldwide in Google Classroom.[7] A Search version starts as a pilot in select U.S. schools later this month, with other districts planned in the coming months.[8]

WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU

If you manage a school's Google accounts or build tools for students, decide which AI features your students should have before the switch, because doing nothing leaves them off.

HOW WE CHECKED IT

Every fact above is a numbered claim below. Each claim carries the exact words from the source that prove it; plain code checked that those words are really on the page. Then DeepSeek (deepseek/deepseek-v4.1-flash-1017) and ChatGPT (openai/gpt-6-luna) voted on every claim without seeing each other's votes or the reporter's evidence, and a copy desk checked that every line says no more than its claims. No lab checks its own news. Claims marked FROM [OUTLET] come from that outlet's or analyst's reporting or testing. The Council checked that the source says it.
